Protecting Your Furniture & Appliances During Pune's Monsoons
Share
Pune's monsoon is one of the most dramatic seasonal shifts in India — going from 38°C dry heat in May to sustained heavy rainfall and 85%+ humidity by July. For renters with furniture and appliances, this transition period is the highest-risk time of year for damage. Here's your complete checklist for getting through it without incident.
Understanding the Risk
Monsoon humidity affects different materials in different ways:
- Wood and engineered wood (MDF/HDF) — absorbs moisture, causing swelling, warping, and joint loosening. Prolonged exposure leads to mould growth on surfaces and inside joints
- Upholstery — fabric and foam absorb ambient moisture, creating conditions for mould and mildew growth, especially in rooms with poor ventilation
- Electrical appliances — humidity increases the risk of short circuits, particularly for appliances near windows, on damp floors, or in poorly ventilated utility areas
- Metal components — bed frames, sofa legs, and appliance bodies can develop surface rust if exposed to sustained moisture
Wooden Furniture: Monsoon Checklist
- ✔ Move furniture away from windows and exterior walls — even closed windows allow moisture ingress during heavy rain. Keep a minimum 15 cm gap between furniture and exterior walls
- ✔ Use silica gel packets in wardrobes and drawers — replace monthly during peak monsoon. Available at most hardware stores for under ₹200
- ✔ Run a dehumidifier or AC in dry mode — keeping indoor humidity below 60% prevents mould growth on wood surfaces. AC dry mode is more energy-efficient than cooling mode for this purpose
- ✔ Wipe down wooden surfaces weekly — use a dry microfibre cloth to remove surface moisture before it penetrates the finish
- ✔ Check drawer runners and hinges — swelling wood can cause drawers to stick and doors to misalign. Report any sticking to us promptly — early intervention prevents permanent warping
- ✔ Apply furniture polish or wax to exposed wood surfaces — creates a moisture barrier that slows absorption. Use a product appropriate for the finish (matte, satin, or gloss)
Upholstered Furniture: Monsoon Checklist
- ✔ Vacuum sofas and mattresses weekly — removes dust and surface moisture before it settles into the foam
- ✔ Air cushions regularly — remove seat and back cushions and stand them upright in a ventilated area for a few hours every week
- ✔ Use a fabric freshener or anti-mould spray — products like Febreze or dedicated upholstery anti-mould sprays help suppress mildew growth in humid conditions
- ✔ Never place wet clothing or towels on upholstered furniture — a common habit that significantly accelerates mould growth in foam
- ✔ Report musty odours immediately — a musty smell is an early indicator of mould growth inside foam. Early treatment is far simpler than remediation after full mould establishment
Appliances: Electrical Safety Checklist
- ✔ Check that washing machines are on a raised platform or anti-vibration mat — keeps the base off damp utility room floors and reduces vibration transfer
- ✔ Ensure all appliance plugs and sockets are away from water sources — check that sockets near washing machines and kitchen appliances have splash guards
- ✔ Do not run appliances during lightning storms — power surges during storms are a leading cause of appliance damage. Use surge protectors for refrigerators and washing machines
- ✔ Clean refrigerator coils and door seals — humidity causes condensation on coils and can degrade rubber door seals. Wipe seals monthly with a mild anti-fungal solution
- ✔ Keep the area behind appliances ventilated — don't push refrigerators flush against walls; maintain a 10 cm gap for airflow to prevent overheating in humid conditions
What to Do If Damage Occurs
If you notice swelling, warping, mould, or any appliance malfunction during the monsoon, contact us immediately. As your rental provider, we handle repairs and replacements — attempting DIY fixes on rented furniture or appliances can void your coverage and complicate deposit returns.
